The world of fitness training, allows you the opportunity to truly change people’s lives by providing them with inspiration and knowledge about which decisions the can make in the daily basis, to live happier and healthier.
The world of fitness in general, not only training others can be quite rewarding in every sense of the word. You are doing something that is definitely good for your health that keeps you in a good mood, and with benefits that can be clearly seen by looking at the mirror. Now imagine all of this combined with the chance of teaching a step class on the sundeck of an oceanfront pool in beautiful Montego Bay, Jamaica, or stretching into a yoga pose on the beach in Cancun, Mexico, with the warmth of the sunset as your backdrop. All of this, while doing something you love while making a difference in other people’s lives and getting paid for it.
While being passionate about fitness and living a fit lifestyle can be a huge accomplishment on its own. For some people, that just isn’t enough, as they want to take it to the next level and actively help others reach their fitness goals, turning their love for exercise into a full-time career.
Life as a certified fitness instructor does have its perks. Salaries are competitive, hours are flexible, there is potential for growth and obviously the chance to work anywhere in the world.
Making the decision to pursue a career in fitness training is just the beginning, but keep in mind that there is a considerable amount of time and money that you must invest in order to be successful. Clients usually are quite demanding on whom they hire as a coach and whom they want to follow and be motivated by. Therefore, it is necessary to be properly prepared and certified to take on this type of job and to do it right.
One of the first things you must do is to choose a certification. There are many different organizations and programs that offer fitness industry certifications, such as: The American Council on Exercise (ACE), National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), The International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA), The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and The National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). All of these are reputable choices and the decision is pretty much your own, but it would probably be a good idea to find out within the gym or the place you want to travel to and work and see which type of certification they require.
After being certified, your best bet would be to choose a fitness specialty you enjoy. Is not the same to guide a spinning or yoga class than to work one-on-one with a person who is trying to train for a marathon or a bodybuilder in progress. You don’t have to stay in one field either, you can get certified in something now and later learn something else. The point is to choose what you feel passionate about and the type of field you would like to focus on. Never stop learning, study constantly and become well versed in different aspects of health like exercise, the human body and nutrition amongst other subjects of interest.
It is important as well to practice what you preach. A personal trainer has to live a fit life, eat well, exercise constantly and maintain a physique that others want to emulate and follow.
The last step in your journey towards a career in fitness as a traveling personal trainer is to find a place where you want to go and apply for a position there. The travel industry has high demand for fitness instructors for positions in resorts, cruise ships and hotels. Even outside of the industry, the world of fitness is getting bigger every year, gyms are opening up everywhere and people are more conscious than ever about the decisions they make on what they eat and how they take care of their bodies. There are pretty much no locations in the world that wouldn’t have a market for those who belong to the world of fitness.
Another interesting option comes in the way of teaching vacations for fitness professionals where you can find a position in hundreds of locations worldwide where you can work as a yoga instructor, a personal trainer or simply leading work-out sessions for guests lodged at the hotels or resorts where you work at.
Some teaching positions offer free room and board at the all-inclusive resort. Plus, they get to bring a guest and in some cases, their kids. All for free.
