Food can have a surprisingly strong effect on your state of mind. Some meals can make you feel alert and energetic, while others have a tendency to lull you into a soporific stupor. Before you go to a job interview, you need to be at your best. Eat at least an hour before your interview, and try to stick to the following types of foods:
– Healthy fats. Essential fatty acids, like the ubiquitously marketed omega-3s, help your brain to function at its best. Your body relies on the food you eat to get these fatty acids, so try to consume fish, nuts, olive oil, and avocados.
– Lean protein. Carbohydrate-heavy meals can make you sleepy after several hours, which is the last thing you need when you’re trying to think on your feet and impress an interviewer. On the other hand, foods that are high in lean protein, like eggs or white meat, make it easier for your body to create chemicals that promote better brain function. Thus, you should stick to lean protein and avoid carb-heavy foods like bagels and muffins.
– Stress reducers. Some amino acids have been shown in research to help reduce stress hormone levels. Yogurt and nuts are rich in the amino acids that have been shown to do so.
– Vitamins. Vitamins B6 and B12 help to improve your focus and memory. Vitamin K contributes to focus, as well. Leafy greens provide vitamin K, while B vitamins can be found in whole grains or vegetables such as cauliflower and broccoli.
– Coffee. Unless you’re highly sensitive to caffeine, a cup of coffee can enhance your short-term memory and boost your ability to pay attention and solve problems. You can have a cup with your meal or shortly before the interview. However, make sure not to overdo it, as too much caffeine can make you jittery.
