Key Tips for Choosing the Best Interview Makeup

Key Tips for Choosing the Best Interview Makeup

Ultimately, an interview provides an opportunity to impress interviewers with your skill set, your motivation, and your vision. At the same time, appearance has a lot to do with first impressions, which are extremely important. When preparing for an interview, both men and women need to carefully consider their appearance and the message that it sends to hiring managers. Women have the added challenge of thinking about makeup.

While you want to look good to make a great first impression, you also want to look professional. When it comes to makeup, less is often more because too much makeup can be rather distracting. If your skill set is overshadowed by the bright shade of lipstick or eye shadow that you used during the interview, you will probably not get a job offer.

The best option is to stick with a fairly neutral makeup palette. For your eyelids, choose a color this is close to your skin tone. Candidates sometimes choose a distinctive color like blue to stand out from other applicants, but this could make you stand out for the wrong reasons. Similarly, nude or light-colored lipsticks are safest. You also want to look your age, so you should avoid lip gloss, which comes across as rather youthful.

Avoid using too much foundation. A light base is ideal. To minimize blemishes, use a concealer, and a thin layer of blush or bronzer can help make skin appear more radiant. For your eyes, be sure to use mascara because it helps people appear more awake and alert. Liquid eyeliner is often too dramatic, so you should stick with gel or pencil eyeliner.

You want to make a good impression, but you should also feel like yourself during an interview. A good rule of thumb is to use your typical makeup routine but tone it down a bit. For example, if you like a dramatic red lip, try a red lip stain instead. Similarly, replace a dark cat eye with the lighter kitten flick.
