Hiring Trends in 2014

Every year, the job market looks a little different, not just in terms of who’s hiring for what but also in terms of who’s looking for work and how they’re being hired. For 2014, human resources experts have identified a number of trends that will help to shape the job market, including the following:

– Retiring baby boomers. The trend of baby boomers moving out of the job market and being replaced by Millennials will take place over the course of several years, but 2014 will be one of them. The movement of boomers out of positions high up in companies will create opportunities for younger employees to step in and prove themselves.

– Lots of manual-labor jobs outside of the construction industry. Many job opportunities created in the United States right now are coming in the form of “material mover” and “laborer” positions. In practice, that might mean working in a fulfillment center for an online retailer or loading machines in a factory with the materials that it needs to work. While these jobs typically pay fairly poorly, they are expected to be more readily available than others.

– Jobs are being brought back to the United States from overseas. In 2013, 23 percent of firms that participated in offshoring repatriated jobs from foreign countries. In 2014, that number is expected to grow to 26 percent.

– Additional training at work. Nearly half of the employers surveyed by the jobs website Career Builder had plans to hire and train employees without experience in their industry in 2014. More than a quarter of those surveyed reported that they planned to send current employees to school in order to improve their skills.

– A focus on benefits, particularly at small businesses. Health care reform has had a significant effect on the benefits marketplace for small businesses. In 2014, companies are expected to compete for qualified applicants in part based on the strength of the benefits packages they offer.
